One of the first pages on my site was "Jeff On Politics?" I realize now that some of my views are different from when I made that page, so do I decided it was time to update it. You'll notice that there no longer is a question mark after the title. I don't intend to make anyone angry with this page. If you would like to discuss a topic, you are more than welcome to email me. So am I a Democrat or a Republican? I, like most Americans, have views that are on both sides of the fence. I even have some Libertarian views! My Views on Issues Recent Supreme Court Decisions Gay people should be allowed to have sex and get married. There are some political figures that think we're still in the 1800's. The War on Iraq I'm glad the war was over quickly, with minimal casualties on our side. One thing I've learned from this is that the average American has no idea why were there. The Environment Let’s get one thing straight. I am completely for doing everything we can to make the Environment cleaner and healthier. What I am against are environmental issues that do not exist. Great amounts of money are spent to try to correct these “problems,” when the money could be used for something more useful. The three big environmental non-issues are Global Warming, Depletion of the Ozone Layer, and the Depletion of the Rainforests. Global Warming It’s funny, in the 70’s they were worried about Global Cooling. The fact is that you can find many studies showing that there is Global Warming and many that show there is no Global Warming. Who should you believe? Well, keep in mind that there are many people seem to want Global Warming to exist, so that environmental legislation can be passed. If there is Global Warming, it would cause the glaciers to melt, which would cause the sea level to rise, which would then flood every coastal city in the world. This is simply not happening. Of course, all of this would be gradual. However, if the average temperature has already risen as much as some studies show, areas like parts of New Orleans and the Delmarva Peninsula would already be underwater. Again, this is not the case. If there is Global Warming, it is not caused by man. The people who claim there is Global Warming say it is caused by greenhouse gases being admitted into the atmosphere. The amount of these greenhouse gases that have been emitted by man does not match the amount emitted by one volcanic eruption. We simply do not have the capability to effect the atmosphere in such a way, and thus can not prevent a change, if it were occurring. If there was Global Warming, you would not notice it locally. If the average temperate in your area has increased by 10 degrees, that’s a Climatic Change, not a Global change. A ten degree rise in the average Global temperature would probably mean the end of mankind. During the Ice Age, the average temperature dropped less than 10 degrees. Depletion of the Ozone Layer The holes in the Ozone layer were discovered in the 19th century, long before the world was Industrialized as it is today. These holes are caused by the prolonged, concentrated sunlight at the poles. They grow and shrink each year, depending on the amount of sunlight. However, the overall size of the hole is not increasing. Depletion of the Rain Forests If you were to ask the leader of Greenpeace an environmental question, you would probably expect a biased opinion leaning toward doing more for the environment. A few years ago, he went to inspect the condition of the rainforests to see how bad it had become. His conclusion was that the forests were thriving and actually larger than they have been a number of decades ago. And that the environmentally biased opinion!
Homeland Security It is really sad that no one had time to read the entire bill before it was signed. This is a very important issue and should not have been rushed. It does take away many of our freedoms.
The 2000 election Ok, yes the butterfly ballot was designed by a Democrat (former Republican. And yes, a telemarketing company did call up older citizens to try to convince them they may have voted for the wrong candidate. But this is not the point. The point is that the ballot was confusing enough that someone could easily have voted for Buchanan when they intended to vote for Gore. The number of voted Buchanan received where many times what was expected. He even admitted that he shouldn’t have received as many votes. If they could have corrected this, Gore would have won. I was just reading about how many absentee ballots that should have been disqualified were not. If the invalid ballots were not counted, Gore would have won. We will never know how the election would have turned out if everything went smoothly. However, based on the available information, I believe that Gore would have won. Interesting info on "Chads." Someone who worked for the company that produced the voting machines used in the 2000 election in Florida came on the Rush Limbaugh show to discuss Chads. He said that it was impossible to produce a "dimple" in a Chad. However, he did say that it was possible to create a "hanging" Chad, where the circle was punched, but didn't completely fall of the ballot. Political People
George W. Bush Has had the highest approval rating since Reagan. Most people feel he is doing a good job. He definitely handled the attack on Afghanistan better than Gore would have. He is often seen as not intelligent due to his poor English. Many people believe he isn't concentrating enough on the economy. I think the 2000 election would have been a landslide if he kept his mouth shut about abortion.
Al Gore Self-proclaimed "inventor of the internet." Many people believe that he should have won the 2000 election. He is thought of as having no personality, although his appearance on Saturday Night Live was entertaining. May not have handled the war on terrorism as good as Bush.
Bill Clinton Yes, he lied to the American public. Yes, he did many things to try to create a legacy. However, in the end he was a good President. His main strategy was to find out what the public wanted and then give it to them.
Rush Limbaugh He is the self-proclaimed "most listened to talk radio show" in America (statistically this would be Howard Stern.) If you want to know what the opinion of the far right is, this is the man to listen to. He often uses flawed logic and false analogies to try to make points. I am surprised that more people don't point this out. I may make a list of the ones I can remember. In the end, his show is very entertaining and has made me more conservative than I was before listening to him.
Michael Moore You could call him the Anti- Rush Limbaugh. He is so far on the left that he criticizes the Democratic party for being too conservative. He could be called an "Environmental Wacko." He is known for doing outrageous stunts, such as getting world leaders to meet for a pizza to try to solve their disputes. Read his book "Stupid White Men" to get all of his opinions.
